Action Idea: Ask what if questions. What if I could discover the cure for AIDS? What if I could run a three-minute mile? What if I give love first without expecting anything in return?
Gaining true empathy for others often requires a willingness to go through extremely painful experiences with the darker side of life. Most often, it is the experience of getting back the wrong-doing you have offended others with, going from villain to victim and seeing both in the mirror at the same time. These empathy-building experiences usually happen when you are confronted with an undeniable failure, which your ego has protected you from acknowledging, at least until that can no longer happen because you are beginning to become more humble.
Effective Journaling, lesson 3: Lastly, make sure you do not write things down then stick them away never to be read again! Last week I wrote about a traumatic event in my life. I recorded my feelings, I feel sick to my stomach, I cannot sleep, my mind is preoccupied, I cannot concentrate. This week I read my journal entry and am able to see the improvements Im making in getting through last weeks struggle. Im still having concentration issues, and my stomach is still upset when I think about it, but Im sleeping through the night and Im able to concentrate most of the day.
